The Application Process

"A qualification in Policing has become a necessity, not a luxury"

All applicants for the NSW Police Service are required to complete the Diploma of Policing Practice through the Police College in Goulburn.

There are three options for studying the first half of the Diploma of Policing Practice: full-time, part-time or as a graduate entry. The second half of the Diploma of Policing Practice is studied by distance education while you are employed as a Probationary Constable.

Charles Sturt University also offer an enabling program which will assist you to develop knowledge and skills in the areas of academic understanding and learning, and effective reading, writing and communication that are required for success in tertiary study.

As preference is given to applicants over 21 years of age, younger applicants are strongly encouraged to pursue related tertiary education, such as the Bachelor of Social Science - Justice Studies (Charles Sturt University) rather than the Diploma of Policing Practice. They may then enter the Diploma of Policing Practice in Session 2 before being employed as a Probationary Constable.

In order to be admitted to the course you will need to satisfy a two stage process: Firstly, you will need to meet academic entry criteria. Once you are deemed academically eligible to enter the course, you will then need to have your Professional suitability for employment as a police officer assessed by the NSW Police. This professional suitability assessment requires you to provide documentation such as:

  • Medical certification, that you meet the NSW Police health and fitness standards.
  • A declaration of any traffic violations or prior criminal convictions.
  • A record waiver, allowing the police service to access enrolment and grade information.
  • Evidence of a full and current motor vehicle license.

All the appropriate forms for these declarations are supplied in the information package.

Applicants are also encouraged to apply for a scholarship which is paid in instalments over the first half of the Diploma: $12, 000 or $8,000 (full-time students), $4000 (graduate students), and up to $4000 (part-time students),. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic, professional and financial need criteria to approximately 60% of students entering the Diploma of Policing Practice. All students who enter as graduates receive a scholarship.

Students accepted into the Diploma of Policing Practice, undergo an assessment of their psychological and physical suitability throughout the duration of the program.
