The
School of Policing Studies is located in Goulburn.
Charles
Sturt University is the major provider of police education at
tertiary level in Australia. Currently more than 5,000 students
are enrolled in policing programs.
Charles
Sturt University and the NSW
Police Service have formed a unique partnership to design,
develop and deliver tertiary courses in policing. The partnership
is an important strategy in the development of ethical and
professional police officers in a rapidly changing police
environment. The resources of a large residential Police College
and a University have been brought together to provide a balanced,
innovative service in policing education.
The
University's School
of Policing Studies and Centre for Investigative Studies and
Crime Reduction are co-located with the NSW Police College at
Goulburn. Members of the School and Centre work closely with staff
of the College to set new directions in police education.
The School
of Policing Studies, in collaboration with the Schools of the
Police College, is tasked with delivering the Diploma
of Policing Practice (DPP). The DPP is the compulsory recruit
training program of the NSW Police Service. It is designed to meet
the educational needs of entry level police practitioners and
focuses on the foundation studies and applied skills necessary for
the modern policing profession. The School also provides the
Constables Development Program of the NSW Police Service and the
Bachelor of Policing. The Bachelor of Policing is available, by
distance education, to experienced police from all jurisdictions.
The
Centre for Investigative Studies and Crime Reduction offers
the Bachelor of Policing (Investigations); the Bachelor of
Policing (Prosecutions); post-graduate university courses; and,
client specific short-courses in investigations, intelligence,
compliance & negotiation. The courses are "designed by
police for police" and can be studied by distance education.
All these courses articulate with and give credit for industry
training and experience.
Whether you
are interested in recruitment to the NSW Police Service, a program

The
Genesis
In 1993,
Charles Sturt University and the NSW Police Service signed an
agreement to establish a Professional Development Centre in
Policing to be located at the NSW Police College. The program was
supported by funding from the Education and Training Foundation.
The primary
purpose of the agreement was to support the development and
offering of a Constable Development Program leading to the award
of a Diploma of Policing, a requirement for promotion to Senior
Constable in the NSW Police Service. An equally important purpose
of the agreement was the enhancing of collaboration between
Charles Sturt University and the Police Service in teaching and
research in policing, and in strengthening the development of
educational activities at the College.
In 1997,
Charles Sturt University and the NSW Police Service signed a
further agreement to design, develop and deliver a comprehensive
recruit training program. The program which combines University
study with the practical elements of the policing profession is
known as the Diploma
of Policing Practice (DPP). Over 1,200 recruits per year
commence study in the DPP at the Goulburn Campus.
