The Crime Stoppers Unit is a specialist
section of the New South Wales Police service. Crime Stoppers operates as an
independent registered company (Crime Stoppers Limited) and is managed by a
Board of Directors comprises of private industry representatives and nominated
Police Service representatives.

Crime Stoppers aims to implement and reinforce the concept
of community-based policing, a concept which was instituted and promoted by Mr
John Avery, the former NSW Police Commissioner.
In January 1989 NSW Crime Stoppers began operation.
The primary objective of Crime Stoppers is to encourage
members of the community to provide information to Police, through the Crime
Stoppers Unit, so that offenders cam be arrested. Callers can remain anonymous
if they do not wish to become personally involved.
Rarely does a crime occur where someone in the community
does not have any information to provide.
Crime Stoppers aims to promote a community-minded philosophy
by encouraging people to socially responsible. Quality of life can be greatly
improved if people report and information which may assist Police to reduce the
level and incidence of crime.
Cash payments of up to $1,000 are paid for
information that leads to an arrest.
Crime Stoppers relies entirely on corporate and community
support to enable payments to be made and promotions to be carried out.
The `Put the Finger on Crime' motto actively
encourages the support.
Your help and support will enable Crime Stoppers to gain
greater community awareness, and the success achieved so far will continue as a
result of continuing support and sponsorship.
