These
cameras are part of our strategy to reduce accidents caused by
drivers running red lights. We target intersections with an
unsatisfactory record of accidents. Since the introduction of red
light cameras in 1987 there has been a 56% reduction in collisions
at traffic light controlled intersections. The camera plays an
important role in the overall Road Safety Campaign.
The camera is activated when a vehicle crosses
over the stop line after the light turns red.
If the intersection was blocked in front and the
driver was unable to clear the intersection until the light has
turned red, the camera is not activated.
Driver's License Demerit Points
Disobey traffic light signal: 3 points.
The owner of a vehicle that has been photographed
receives an infringement notice. The vehicle owner is responsible
for a camera detected offence unless they state that another
person was in charge of the vehicle at the time on a statutory
declaration.
When an infringement notice is ignored it is
referred to the Roads & Traffic Authority for cancellation of
the vehicle registration or the owner's driving licence.
