MOBILE PHONE THEFT IS INCREASING.  SIMPLE STEPS CAN PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT.    

Criminals target mobile phones and in particular digital (GSM) phones and their SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) Cards.

Mobile phone theft costs owners time and inconvenience of replacement, the price of a new handset and often large bills for unauthorised use.

Suggestions on how to secure your phone against theft :

1.     Read the user card supplied with  your phone. It will include instructions on how to  secure your digital phone and may cover :

SIM Security - SIM Cards allow for different users to use the same handset or to access different networks (e.g. overseas). All SIM Cards are supplied with an activated network PIN Code - this code should remain activated so that every time the phone is switched on it will ask for this code. You can change the code to an easily remembered number.

Equipment Security Code - This code is also supplied with your phone. It creates a second level of security. If a SIM Card other than your own is inserted, the phone will ask for this security code. Again, change it to an easily remembered number.

Mobile phones have an electronic serial number called an IMEI number - which is unique to each phone handset. Mobile phone owners should record their IMEI number in a secure place, away from the phone.

2.   Engrave the phone and batteries with your driver’s licence number preceded by the first  letter of the state of issue of your licence e.g. NSW123456 or if you have a driver’s licence  commencing with a letter, include the letter when engraving e.g. JS23456. If the phone  is a work phone, get permission first and then engrave the organizations’ name and your  location. Mobile phones are made of durable plastic which makes engraving ideal.

3.   Record the IMEI and SIM Card serial number and keep them in a safe place.
4.   Don’t leave the phone in view in a vehicle. This can attract thieves. A large number of  mobile phones are stolen from vehicles.
5.   Remove the SIM Card in a phone that will be unattended for a long period of time.
6.   Don’t leave your phone unattended in public. Take it with you.
7.   Do ensure you have your phone with you when leaving taxis, meetings, restaurants etc.

If you phone or SIM Card is lost/stolen report it immediately to your telephone provider and to the police

1. Ensure all windows and doors are secured when you leave.
2. Don’t leave valuables such as mobile phones on display.
3. Try to keep such items in a secure or concealed location within the home when left  unattended.

If your mobile phone is stolen don’t perpetuate the market for stolen phones by purchasing another stolen phone. Buy your phone from a reputable mobile phone outlet.
