About the Wall of
Remembrance
Designed by
Russell Rodrigo and Jennifer Gamble, NSW Department of Public Works.
Built by Hutchison & Quigley Constructions Pty Ltd.
Background
In February 1999, the Premier of New South Wales, Mr Carr,
announced the Government would fund the construction of a memorial
to honour the memory of police officers who died serving the NSW
community since the Police Service was established in 1862.
A design by architects Russell Rodrigo and Jennifer Gamble was
the preferred choice from 22 submissions judged by representatives
from the Police Service, the NSW Police Association, the Royal
Botanic Gardens and Domain Trust, the Government Architect's Office,
the Art Gallery of NSW, the Historic Houses Trust and the Sydney
Open Museum.
The Memorial
The Memorial honours all police officers who have served the
people of New South Wales and the memory of those who lost their
lives in the course of duty. Over the last 137 years, 234 police
officers have died doing their job. Their names are etched in the
Memorial's largest wall and will be joined by the names of officers
who give their lives in the future.
In a gentle arc, the Memorial emerges from the landscape, three
curved black granite walls rising from the fall of the earth,
creating a special place for remembrance. Black polished granite
reflects the faces of those who come to pause and remember.
Blue daisies are featured in a garden bed near a seat provided
for visitors. The NSW State flag and the flag of the NSW Police
Service fly nearby.
The curve of the wall emerges gently from the ground, so it can
be used as seating. As the ground falls, the walls become taller in
relation to the viewer. The walls are all 40cm thick and gradually
increase in length (3.8m to 12.8m) and height (50cm to 1.75m).
Blue cut leaf daisies (Brachycome multifida) will bloom each
September for National Police Remembrance Day ceremonies.
The Wall of Remembrance complements a memorial at the NSW Police
Chapel at the Police Academy in Goulburn. It will be maintained by a
Police Memorial Committee.
