STEPHENSON,
R. George
Constable 1st Class
9 April, 1933.
On 8 April, 1933 Constable Stephenson of the Newtown
Police Station travelled with a group of other Police to
the Newtown Stadium. They parked the Police vehicle in
Erskineville Road, and as the Constable stepped out from
behind the car he was hit by a passing motor cycle outfit.
Constable Stephenson sustained sever injuries and died in
hospital the following morning. A child passenger on the
motor cycle outfit was also killed in the accident.
The
Constable was born in 1886 and joined the New South Wales
Police Force on 9 July, 1912. At the time of his death, he
was stationed at Newtown. He was awarded the Distinguished
Medal during World War 1.

BOORE,
George Frederick
Constable
2 April, 1937.
On the afternoon of the 31 March, 1937, Constable Boore
was a passenger in the sidecar of a Police Public Safety
Bureau motor cycle outfit travelling along Parramatta
Road, Camperdown. Constable Hume was the rider of the
outfit at the time, and they were following a speeding
vehicle. Whilst they were overtaking the vehicle to
attempt to stop it, another vehicle stopped suddenly in
front. Constable Hume braked and swerved to avoid a
collision, however collided with a tram. Unfortunately,
Constable Boore sustained severe injuries in the
collision, and died in the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital on
2 April, 1937.
The
Constable was born in 1907 and joined the New South Wales
Police Force on 20 March, 1928. At the time of his death,
he was attached to the Public Safety Bureau, Police
Headquarters.

McLAUGHLAN,
Frederick James
Constable 1st Class
3 December, 1938.
On 6 January, 1922 Constable McLaughlan attended a
disturbance at Port Kembla. Whilst he was attempting to
arrest a man who had been involved in a fight, another man
attempted to hit the Constable with a bottle of beer. The
Constable consequently punched the man in the mouth, and
in so doing received a deep cut to his right hand. After
suffering some discomfort with the injury, the Constable
sought medical attention. Complications with his health
developed over the next few years and it was eventually
determined that Constable McLaughlan was suffering from an
aortic aneurism which was considered to have been the
result of an infection from the injury sustained in 1922.
He was discharged from the Service medically unfit in
November, 1930, and passed away on 3 December, 1938.
The
Constable was born in 1890 and joined the New South Wales
Police Force on 11 March, 1913. At the time of his injury,
he was stationed at Port Kembla.

STURGISS,
Harold William
Constable 1st Class
2 February, 1939.
On the afternoon of 2 February, 1939, Constable Sturgiss
was riding a Police motorcycle outfit along High Street,
Penrith. As he was negotiating a bend approaching the
bridge over the Nepean River, the wheel of the sidecar
struck the kerbing of the roadway. The cycle veered across
the roadway and collided with a truck travelling in the
opposite direction. Constable Sturgiss was thrown heavily
to the roadway, sustaining sever injuries. He died in
hospital a short time later.
The
Constable was born in 1902 and joined the New South Wales
Police Force on 29 October, 1924. At the time of his
death, he was stationed at Penrith.

GUISE, Lionel George
Constable
26 February, 1939.
On the afternoon of 26 February, 1939 Constable Guise and
Sergeant Werner were patrolling the Newtown area when they
were advised of a possible break and enter offence
occurring in Marion Street, Newtown. On attending the
address, the Police stopped their vehicle beside a truck
which had apparently been used in the offence. As they
stopped, two men jumped from the truck and fled on foot,
pursued by the two Police. As Constable Guise caught up
with one of the offenders, the man turned and threw a torch, striking the Constable in the chest. In the
struggle that followed, the offender managed to shoot the
Constable in the abdomen. Constable Guise died in hospital
a short time later.
The
Constable was born in 1916 and joined the New South
Wales Police Force on 22 November, 1937. At the time of
his death, he was stationed at Newtown.

CARROLL,
Cornelious
Detective Sergeant 3rd Class
6 June, 1939.
About 6pm on 6 June, 1939, Detective Sergeant Carroll, the
Officer in Charge of the Detectives at Petersham, left his
Station to meet with an informant near the Sydney
University. Whilst in Parramatta Road, Camperdown he was
accidentally hit by a car and killed instantly.
The
Sergeant was born in 1888 and joined the New South Wales
Police Force on 24 February, 1915. At the time of his
death, he was stationed at Petersham.

SMITH,
Nicholas Glen
OSGOOD, Alistar Royal
Constable Constable
28 February, 1939.
On 28 February, 1939 Constable Smith was a passenger in a
Police Public Safety Bureau motor cycle outfit driven by
Constable Osgood. Whilst they were in Parramatta Road,
Homebush, they attempted to stop a motor vehicle, and in
so doing the cycle outfit collided with a truck that had
pulled across the roadway in front of them. Both
Constables sustained fractured skulls in the accident, and
both died shortly afterwards.
Constable
Smith was born in 1914 and joined the New South Wales
Police Force on 22 November, 1937. At the time of his
death, he was attached to the Public Safety Bureau.
Constable
Osgood was born in 1912 and joined the Police Force on 6
January, 1936. At the time of his death, he was attached
to the Public Safety Bureau.

DUNN, John Edward
Detective Constable 1st Class
25 April, 1940.
On 25 April, 1940 Wollongong Police attended a dwelling in
Ocean Drive, Wollongong, where an offender, Hinsby, had
beaten his wife to death. After they were confronted and
threatened by the offender, more Police were called. Among
those to attend was Detective Dunn. Whilst attempting to
reach the house to arrest the offender, the Detective
Constable was shot in the forehead and killed. The
offender had been watching his approach through an open
bedroom window. In the siege that followed, tear gas was
used, however it was soon found that the offender had
committed suicide.
The
Detective Constable was born in 1904 and joined the New
South Wales Police Force on 27 March, 1929. At the time
of his death, he was stationed at Wollongong.

WEBB,
William James
Constable
3 June, 1940.
About 4.15pm on 15 July, 1923 Constable Webb was the
rider of a Police motor cycle outfit i Parramatta Road,
Burwood, when he was involved in a collision with a
motor vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. As a
result, the Constable suffered a compound fracture of
the leg and abrasions to his head and body. The exact
cause of the accident was not determined. Due to
deteriorating health caused by his injuries, the
Constable was discharged medically unfit in 1931. He
died on 3 June, 1940 from the effects of staphylococcal
pneumonia.
The
Constable was born in 1891 and joined the New South
Wales Police Force on 31 May, 1917. At the time of his
injury, he was stationed at Burwood.

MURPHY,
Duncan Hughie McCallum
Constable 1st Class
27 September, 1940.
In the early hours of 18 December, 1938, Constable
Murphy went to Leinster Street, Paddington following a
complaint of two intoxicated men causing trouble. The
Constable located one of the men, and as he attempted to
arrest him, the offender struck the Constable a heavy
blow to the right eye. Constable Murphy managed to
subdue the offender, however he was agained attacked and
kicked in the groin and the offender escaped. He was
quickly arrested by Sergeant White. On 10 September,
1940 the Constable was admitted to the Mater Hospital,
North Sydney, for a tumour on the right side of his
brain. The condition proved to be fatal and Constable
Murphy died seventeen days later.
The
Constable was born in 1895 and joined the New South
Wales Police Force on 1 July, 1919. At the time of his
death, he was stationd at Paddington.
