Corrective Services truck at the
ready - Batemans Bay Police Station
|
Sixteen Officers of the New South Wales Department Of
Corrective Services commenced duty at the Batemans Bay Police Station on
Monday, 10 July 2000. Under the command of Assistance Superintendent
Stewart Criss, these Officers will assume responsibility for prisoner
custody and movement throughout the Far South Coast Command, from Batemans
Bay to Eden.
Renovations at the Batemans Bay Police Station have now
been completed at an approximate cost of $300,000,000.
The renovations consisting of the addition of a number of
offices, together with extensions of various other facilities, have
enabled the Corrective Services Officers to operate from within the Police
Station.
There role is to accept all
Form 7's off the police and then take them to court either that day or the
following day. The officers operate from the cells on a 24 hour period 7
days a week. The catchment area is from Batemans Bay down to Eden.
Therefore any police in between with Form 7's can drop prisoners off and
these officers will take care of them. Wherever a court sits, from
Batemans Bay to Eden, Corrective Services will operate from that court.
The officers that operate from
Batemans Bay have come from Grafton, Bathurst, Sydney, Mannus and
Goulburn.
The vehicles used to transport
the inmates to the various courts are 16 seaters with air suspension,
coach air conditioning, and all the seats are fitted with seat belts. The
vehicles are broken into 4 sections, allowing officers to place different categories
of inmates in the vehicle.
The community of Batemans Bay
also benefits with the arrival of these officers, 16 officers with their
families will require permanent housing, schooling and shopping etc, the
list goes on.
