Youth Liaison Officer is Senior Constable
Mel Feld.
Sen Con Mel Feld was allocated this full time position in April of
2001. Mel is responsible for ensuring the provisions of the Young Offenders Act,
now
known as the YOA.
The role of the Youth Liaison Officer is a complex one, and requires many long hours of
hard work to achieve a long term goal as most ventures will not come to light over night,
but take many months of planing and hard work before they become a reality.
Mel has the
job to support and advise operational police on the provisions of the YOA, and to
make determinations in reference to the Young Offenders Act
for young offenders under 18 years of age.
A lot of time is taken up with involvement in local youth specific projects and
committees such as the Eurobodalla Youth Service (Teenzone),
Eurobodalla S.P.I.R.I.T., (suicide prevention), and the Workers With
Youth Network, just to mention a few. Mel also has the responsibility to help
initiate programs for young people and young offenders within the LAC, along with
pro-active programs such as aboriginal drug and alcohol and substance
abuse workshops.
Another aspect of the role of Youth Liaison Officer is that of education: assisting
other police with Cautions, the YOA, Youth Justice Conferencing and other youth
related issues, also community awareness concerning the police role when dealing with
young persons. There is also the liaison between interagency groups such as DOCS,
(Department Of Community Services), DJJ, (Department of Juvenile Justice), and CenterLink,
not to mention other non government agencies re youth issues.
Mel's goal is to reduce the amount of young people becoming victims and offenders
through active participation within the community, and the opening of clear, positive
communication within the entire community.
